Who is the Cosmic Athlete
Who is the Cosmic Athlete?

Walking a different path, no longer fitting in, can be a test of character. When moving into unfamiliar territory, pioneers and visionaries typically face the fear of separation, being cut off from the group. At times like these, we need to remember that we’re not all here to fit in; some of us are here to lead.

"Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail." Ralph Waldo Emerson

For the Cosmic Athlete, even the ordinary tasks of life can become extraordinary. While many athletes may experience moments of clarity in “the zone”, most fail to expand this clarity into everyday life. Cosmic Athletes realize that "We are not the roles we play, we are the role players." A doctor out on the golf course is a golfer, not a doctor. A basketball player at home with his children is a father, not a basketball player. We express ourselves authentically when we surrender fully into what we are doing in the moment. In truth, we are not one of the roles that we play, but all of them. Each is an expression of our infinite self collapsed into a magnifying glass into the form of the moment.

This realization, allows Cosmic Athletes to capture the ease of "the zone" in every activity or venture in our lives. In this state of awareness, all sorts of consequent actions are brought into being as a result of very small and subtle intentions and movements. Rather than getting things done through effort and brute force, we start to operate very subtly. A flow of meaning begins to operate around us as if we were part of a larger conversation. Cosmic Athletes lead not only by doing, but by being.

The old paradigm of being a leader rests upon an underlying desire to stand alone atop the mountain looking down upon a cascade of admiring “lower achievers”. This is the essence of the "Darwinian Athlete" – the old paradigm. Let us enlighten you to the contrast of energy behind "The Darwinian Athlete" and "The Cosmic Athlete."

THE DARWINIAN ATHLETE – OLD PARADIGM     THE COSMIC ATHLETE – NEW PARADIGM
Concerned with Quantity in life     Concerned with Quality of life
Easily affected by the good or bad opinions of others     Unaffected by the opinions of others – good or bad
Reactive, Impulsive, and controlled by past mental, social, and cultural conditioning     Free to consciously choose with an intuitive and creative response
Motivated by fear     Motivated by love
  Extrinsically motivated     Intrinsically motivated
Actions are embedded with the obsession to prove others wrong or right     Fully immersed into each moment executing movements with precision and power
Focused on the destination     Focused on the journey
Obsessively compares him/herself to others     Mind is free from comparison
Primary drive is to “beat the other guy”     Primary drive is to achieve peak performance "in the zone"
Invests energy into developing the body through rigorous training routines     Adopts and Follows daily training routines for the mind as well as the body

Damian Vaughn: What were your motivations before everything just clicked in terms of aligning yourself with a bigger and higher purpose for your life as an athlete?

Khadevis Robinson: At first my motivations were succeeding in sports and life. Coming from the inner city and surrounded by poverty and negativity, I did not know many ways out to a productive life. My family was amazing as they always had confidence in me and made me feel as if I could do and be anything. They also told me that you could accomplish anything if you just worked hard enough at it. So, from a very young age I always was willing to work very hard at things I wanted to achieve. Not only with sports, but with academics, relationships, and anything in life.   So, initially I would just have some goal in my head, though I am not sure where the goal would come from, and then I would just be willing to do whatever it took to accomplish it.

DV: What happened in your life that brought clarity to your purpose for running?
KR: It’s ironic because Les Brown once said, that there are two important moments in one’s life:

  1. The moment you were born.

  2. The moment you realize why you were born.

I love that statement. The event that brought clarity in my life was not a single event. It was a chain of events or numerous events.

  1. The moment my stepfather died when I was a senior in High School. Though I lived in a rough neighborhood and was raised extremely poor, I had a pretty good upbringing. The day he died made me understand that the world can be cruel. It woke me up. It made me ask myself, what was I doing with my life. By asking this question, I knew I needed to make some changes.

  2. The first time I missed the Olympic team. This event made me realize that I did not have enough balance in my life and I had put too much of myself into one thing. So I decided to be more balanced with life, balanced with spirituality, relationships, work, health, and everything.

  3. The moment I made the Olympic team made me understand that timing is important.

  4. The second time I missed the Olympic team was a really defining moment. This is the moment in which I speak about when I give speeches. This event helped me understand that I was not running track or playing sports just to make money, or get fame/recognition, or win. I was playing sports because this is the talents that GOD (life, universe, energy, the world) had given me and it is a tool for me to positively inspire, motivate, and help others. I, me, you, we all were put here for a purpose. I realized my purpose for being here.

DV:  What are your motivations now when you train and compete?

KR: I train to compete well. My motivations to compete well are that I recognize that by performing well, track becomes a vehicle for me to reach others. I want to reach others to inspire, motivate, and help them. Help them understand that there are parallels between sports and between other parts of life and in many cases; the way to succeed in one is the same way to succeed in the other.

DV:  What is your vision for your career and for your life?

KR: My vision for my career is for me to continue to be: The hand of Mona Lisa Skirt. I want to continue to be a surprise so people will say, how does he do it. I want to get people to asking questions because, for questions there are answers, for answers there are no answers.

DV::  What mark do you aim to make in the world?

I aim to help others realize and fulfill their full potential. I feel that is my purpose in life. To share wisdom and help others feel their greatness. In one of the greatest books ever, it is written: “We are made in the image and likeness of GOD”. That is powerful.  If that is true, then we all have greatness in us. Yet, in that same book, it states that the way to become great is to serve. He who is greatest amongst you, shall be your servant.  So I feel the way that Cus D’Amato put it:

"Greatness is not a measure of how great you are but how great others came to be because of you"

SO I want to help others become great.  I will attempt to do this in this way:

A boy comes to me with a spark of interest and it becomes a flame. I feed the flame and it becomes fire, I feed the fire and it becomes a roaring blaze. Cus D'Amato

Thanks Damian.

Despite realizing a series of consistent successes early on in his high school and collegiate football career, Sean’s NFL career did not start out in the same vein. Because he did not fit the standard mold of the prototypical NFL receiver, standing at 5’ 11? tall, playing time was a tough commodity to come by. As a counterbalance to his early stream of successes, Sean spent the next four years in the professional ranks chasing after the illusive NFL dream, facing crossroad after crossroad in his path. The setbacks seemed abundant which could have prompted him to succumb to severe doubt and hopelessness.

A shift took place and he began playing the game in the same way that he approached his personal life – as a perpetual student on a path and process of mastering himself. As the shift materialized timing became his ally and opportunity knocked on his door for the first time in almost a handful of years. The first phase of his growth and the blossoming of his NFL career can be attributed to his tenacity. However, Sean’s greatness is a result of his thirst for growth both internally and externally.

The success that followed that shift resulting in 2 Super Bowl appearances, 1 Super Bowl ring, an appearance as a starter in the Pro Bowl, are all a by-product of his ability to couple tenacity with vulnerability. His tenacity is expressed through a powerful will to realize his destiny and realize the fulfillment of his desires. His vulnerability is manifested through his ever curious approach toward life – never the expert, always seeking knowledge and wisdom to fuel growth.

Sean is the Cosmic Athlete because his power comes from a place beyond his physical capacity. He embraces his role as an athlete with tremendous appreciation and fulfillment, because he is free from being identified with it. He is focused on the journey, not the destination. This “motto? is lived out by Sean each day of his career by directing his attention fully into the process of the moment, not the outcome or consequence of his actions.

This simple and subtle shift has opened Sean up to become not only a mythical hero and role model, but a visionary leader working with imagination, insight, and inspiration. Sean sets the bar higher for the modern day athlete as well as the athlete of the future. He pioneers a movement for athletes that lead by example and stand as true guides among their peers, their communities, our country, and across all humanity.

By seeing and acting upon that which is beyond just our personal needs and wants, we contribute to the whole of humanity. By transforming ourselves into greater beings, we create a collective evolution changing and healing the world. As so wisely expressed by Mahatma Gandhi in his statement "Be the change you want to see in the world", unity is created through this personal commitment.
